May China
“May China — An Eternal Sentiment”
— Dedicated to the artists of the May China-U.S. International Art Festival and art lovers worldwide
The May China-U.S. International Art Festival, simply known as “May China,” has now reached its tenth year. The large-scale “May China — Messenger of Peace” art exchange originally scheduled for 2020 in Shanghai was postponed to May 2021 due to the pandemic.
Along the way, top-tier artists from prestigious American institutions—including Yale, Princeton, Brown, RISD, SAIC, MICA, SVA, NYAA, and the National Academy of Design—together with artists from the China National Academy of Painting and various regional fine arts academies, have spent a decade building a vibrant cultural bridge across the Atlantic.
American artists have said: “High-level art exchange between two major powers is not a competition, but an opportunity.” This opportunity witnesses the dedication and success of artists from both nations.
Chinese painting has a long history where poetry, calligraphy, and painting form a trinity. American artists hold Chinese painting in high esteem. What truly draws them to China? It is the shared quest for “creating space” and innovation.
This reminds me of Jackson Pollock, a titan of American art history. He created a unique style that combined the structure of Cubism with the visual purity of Post-Impressionism, creating spaces like continuous labyrinths.
Exploring space in a painting is like an astronomer exploring a “black hole”—it remains an eternal mystery. Generation after generation of artists use their unique language to prove the existence of this “beautiful black hole.”
“The fundamental cause of the sense of motion is the artistic purpose,” said Wölfflin. I am reminded of Thomas Hart Benton’s rhythmic structures and his use of contours to create a sense of expansion and emotion.
The journey of “May China” is one of painstaking effort and endless exploration. I express my deepest respect to my fellow artists and my gratitude to my alma mater, the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, and our supporters.
