A Vision Through the Piano Keys

luzheng intro 6

In Luzheng’s works—whether depicting urban life or natural landscapes, panoramic scenes or intimate still-life close-ups—everything is expressed through a musical perspective, telling the eternal song of life from the depths of her soul. Her art harmoniously blends unrestrained grandeur with the delicate sensitivity unique to women, quietly communicating with the viewer with sincerity and gratitude. While experiencing the subtle yet dynamic beauty in her images, one cannot help but admire her unique intuition and her ability to capture fleeting moments of beauty.

Every year, Luzheng returns to Xinjiang. While holding her photography exhibitions, she also captures the beautiful scenery of her homeland with a pure and childlike heart. Through these works, she introduces her hometown—Karamay, Xinjiang—to audiences in the United States. As she once said at an exhibition opening reception: “Behind every photograph, there is a touching story…”.

I am a piano teacher and have been engaged in piano professionally since my youth; music has accompanied me into middle age. In 2001, when I traveled to Europe with friends, the moment I first picked up a camera, a special feeling surged within me. I was deeply moved by nature, this eternal classic book. I read it carefully, and every act of photographing made my blood boil. The camera is not merely a mechanical tool; it is more like an extension of my gaze, a way for my soul to speak. I love photography—or rather, nature as an immortal classic has become the lifelong object of my exploration and devotion.

My family and I have lived in the United States for more than ten years, yet most of my life has been spent on the land of Xinjiang in China. We have crossed geographical distances and cultural boundaries; different regions and cultures have left deep marks on us. Even so, most of my works still return to my longed-for homeland: the blue sky, the earth, the towering mountains, the rivers, the forests, the grasslands, and the flocks of sheep.

With these works, I offer them to my friends, hoping to share them with you. I cannot say what kind of “art” they are, but I can say with a clear conscience that they are the outpouring of my heart.

The Blessing of Love

When I boarded the flight from New York to Beijing and opened the window shade, clusters of white clouds rushed toward me. They rose and fell, gliding and circling around the plane like a flock of white swans calling and surging, or like an invisible hand lifting us gently. It was the blessing of love that moved me again and again.

Karamay is also my hometown. Every time I return, I feel an overwhelming sense of familiarity. When the car reaches the nine‑kilometer mark, the scent of home and the warm wind carrying a hint of wormwood embrace me with Karamay’s boundless enthusiasm and the blessings of its people. Like a mother’s call, I breathe deeply again and again, filled with gratitude.

This was my second exhibition in Karamay, and it became an opportunity to report back and share with my family and friends. We have lived in the United States for sixteen years, and looking back on the journey of growth during these years makes me cherish every day even more. When one reaches middle age, how should we live the second half of our lives? What should I do? These questions have lingered in my mind. I love photography—or rather, everything I have realized through photography is like treasures gathered from the sea of art, teaching me to love life and cherish existence. Each exhibition has given me more, for the acceptance and resonance from friends have become my greatest encouragement and motivation. I am deeply grateful to my family and friends in my hometown for making this exhibition a form of communication—soul to soul—an experience, an awakening… a blessing of love.

luzheng intro 8

During Thanksgiving, as I looked at the lawn covered with fallen yellow leaves and at the tree in front of our home that has accompanied us through eighteen springs, summers, autumns, and winters in the United States, I was deeply moved. It has witnessed our growth and challenges since coming to America, and with its dense branches and towering presence, it teaches the world the profound meaning of gratitude and giving. Now, as its autumn leaves fall, it prepares to endure the winter storms, adding new rings and welcoming another cycle of flourishing branches.

Nature has given me an endless source of inspiration. Artists sing freely, mountains stand in their strange beauty, and rivers flow in magnificent splendor—all crafted by the hand of nature. With gratitude, I lift my camera again and again, observing the wondrous transformations of the natural world. Every moment of photographing is filled with revelation and teaching. Nature, this eternal classic, is the book I explore and cherish throughout my life. Like a small tree, my life grows… and changes…

I am a piano teacher, and photography and music are like two wings that carry me across mountains and rivers, back to my homeland—back to Xinjiang, the place where I was born and raised.

I am grateful to Karamay, Xinjiang, for giving me countless opportunities over the years to exhibit my work and express my sincere heart through photography. I also thank the friends who have supported and helped me. Let us now share these eternal moments together.
